Background
The Rotary Club of Iganga is implementing a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) project aimed at improving access to clean water, safe sanitation, and hygiene education in underserved communities across Iganga District and the wider Busoga region.
Globally, 2.2 billion people still lack safely managed drinking water, while 3.5 billion lack access to safely managed sanitation services (WHO, 2022). In Uganda, although strides have been made, significant disparities remain, especially in rural areas. In the Busoga region, only 56.4% of people have access to safe water, and access to handwashing facilities with soap is as low as 2.5% (AHSPR 2022/2023).
These conditions contribute to the spread of preventable diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, cholera, and skin infections, particularly affecting children under five.
Our Intervention
The Rotary WASH Project in Iganga is structured around practical, sustainable, and community-led solutions:
- Construction and rehabilitation of boreholes and water tanks
- Installation of handwashing stations in schools and public institutions
- Community sensitization on hygiene practices and menstrual health management
- School WASH clubs to empower pupils as hygiene ambassadors
- Training of local leaders and caretakers in facility management
These interventions not only reduce disease but also improve school attendance—particularly among girls—and strengthen community dignity and resilience.
Impact and Alignment
The WASH project is aligned with Rotary International’s Area of Focus on Water and Sanitation and contributes directly to Sustainable Development Goal 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
By improving WASH infrastructure and behavior, we are reducing the burden on health facilities, promoting school retention, and enhancing quality of life in rural communities.
We invite partners, well-wishers, and development agencies to join us in scaling up these lifesaving interventions. Whether you can provide funding, materials, technical support, or simply amplify the message—your contribution matters.
Together, let’s bring clean water and dignity to every household.
Support the Rotary WASH Project – because health starts with hygiene.
